Who We Are
The Family Learning Center’s mission statement is, “To encourage successful lifelong learning and economic self-sufficiency, for families of diverse cultures and limited incomes, in a learning environment where families feel nurtured, respected, and empowered.” We believe that family and community offer the best framework for healthy, social, academic, civic, and ethical development of children and families. By offering educational opportunities for the entire family, we strive to nurture a family culture that values education, self-reliance, and community service.
The Family Learning Center began in June 1981 as a grass roots community organization committed to the belief that every child has the unalienable right to pursue a life filled with meaningful opportunities to mature into happy and productive human beings. Inheritant in this belief; is the philosophy that it is the responsibility of every great society to care for its poor, in way that ensures justice and opportunities for everyone to prosper. To this end, the Family Learning Center has endeavored to create and maintain an organization that meets the educational, cultural, social, and emotional and self- empowerment needs of over 2,000 individuals each year.

The Family Learning Center believes in a world where everyone has value. It believes when people of all “walks of life” work together for the common good of our society, our society becomes a more empowering place for everyone. The population we serve reflects the Center’s view of the world. It is comprise of primarily low-income and culturally diverse children and families. Many are immigrant families whose first language is not English. They reside in low income and or subsidized housing communities. They work for very low wages and depend on a variety of government and private aid programs, (e.g. food stamps, food banks, section 8 housing, Medicaid and low cost medical clinics). They also, have a deep commitment to improving the quality of life for their children and families. They all add value to our society through their strong work ethic and their belief in the principles in which this County was founded. the rights of individuals to pursue life, liberty and happiness, in order words, to live the “American Dram” of enhance education and upward mobility within our society. Working together with those individuals and families who have attained a high levels of self- empowerment. The Family Learning Center endeavors to increase employment and educational opportunities through added literacy and computer technology opportunities; to facilitate access to enhanced health and wellness; to provide quality daycare and preschool programs; to improve the educational performance of children of all ages; to increase parental involvement; to promote economic self-reliance and self-sufficiency; to enhance parenting skills; to promote a greater sense of civic responsibility and involvement; and to break the bondage of prolonged cycles of poverty..

Who We Serve
The targeted population served by the Family Learning Center is comprised of: African-American, Latino, ( primarily Mexican-American and immigrants), and Caucasian, 95% of the Center’s children and families are very low-income to moderate –to-low middle income. 75% of the children and families served by the Center reside within the city of Boulder and 25% reside throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties.
Our Programs
Early Childhood Development amd Family Literacy: Quality family literacy based multi-cultural, bilingual preschool classes for 100 low-income children and their families. Full-time child care for low-income working parents, 5 days per week. We provide comprehensive Family Literacy services for all families.. This program aim is to increase parental understanding of the significance of early childhood development in impacting success in school and in life. Provides a link and resources for families to connect with society, by providing this information and skills to successful navigate within various community institutions, ( e.g. school systems, the business community, housing, health care and social service communities. Programs are also designed to build and expand the capacity for self-empowerment of each family. Additionally we provide basic needs for families in the form of 10,000 pounds of food each month, ( though its partnership with Community Food Share) and clothing, furniture and households goods, ( though community donations)
College Readiness and Work Readiness Program: Provides programs and activities aimed at increasing and improving high school outcomes and work options for low-income and minority youth. This is accomplished by providing after-school and mentoring, academic tutoring, remediation services, academic skill development programs, entreprenurialship and work readiness programs, accredited high school courses, ( through its partnership with Boulder Valley School District and Brigham Young University), state- of –art technology programs and cultural and recreational, and youth development programs, and tools needed for school success, ( school supplies, back packs, etc) for 500 culturally and economically diverse children..
Adult Education Programs: Provide meaningful opportunities for parents and other adults to complete their high school education, improve and increase their employment opportunities and to increase their literacy skills for self and family empowerment. Provides opportunities for intergenerational interactions and learning. Each year the Center serves 75 to 100 adults in its adult education programs, and 200 adults and children in its intergenerational programs..

Brenda Ingram-Lyle:
Co-founder and Executive Director of the Family Learning Center.She is the recipient of numerous awards including Zonta Woman of the Year, League of Women Voters "Citizen of Achievement," Ambassador Swanee, Hunt's 5,000 Leadership Award, and Community Action's "Educator of the Year." She has received distinguished recognition from Rocky Mountain Adoption Exchange, Boulder County Latino Association, Boulder Chamber Commerce, Denver Post and the Boulder Daily Camera.

What Sets Us Apart
We are holistic in our approach to meeting critical needs of low income and minority children and their families. We are results oriented with a 100% high school graduation rate for our high school seniors.
Our preschool children out performed their higher income counterparts in the grade schools they attend. 98% of all high school graduate attend college.
Objectives for This Fiscal Year
2008 objectives-
* Complete building plans for new state-of-the art youth and family development center
* Achieve a 100% graduation rate for its low-income and minority students

Recent Accomplishments
Secure major commitment from the Anthony H. Kruse Foundation to build a new state-of- the arth youth and family development center- which will be one of the first of its kind in the United States.
100% of its low-income and minority students graduate from high school
