MICHELLE ROARK

WORLD CUP CHAMPION, OLYMPIAN,

ENTREPRENEUR

PERSONAL DATA

Resides: Denver, CO

Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines

Years on US Ski Team: 11

BACKGROUND

High-energy Olympian Michelle Roark learned to ski in her brother's handme-

down boots while growing up in Colorado. High costs drove her out of

figure skating so she shifted to skiing, a family activity.

Junior national moguls champ in ‘90; Roark missed the next two seasons with

injuries, returned and then headed to college for a couple of seasons.

Roark has fought back from injuries several times during her career and has always landed on the podium after each

setback, including the overall World Cup title in 1999, moguls silver medalist at the 2003 World Championships and back

to back World Cup victories in 2006.

Roark continues to push the sport. Last season, she finished second in Inawashiro, Japan with the first 720 successfully

performed by a woman in World Cup competition to make it an even dozen top-3s in her career.

Michelle has managed to put herself through school at Colorado School of Mines in Chemical Engineering, while

competing and training at a world class level.

Roark, believed to be the only World Cup skier (in any sport) with her own line of perfume. She started an all natural

perfume and cosmetic business based on the ‘Divine Proportions’ of the number Phi. Intrigued with the number and its

presence in nature, art, and music, she developed a concept, submitted a patent application, packaged it and started selling

the product line -- www.phinomenal.com.

In the off-season along side a rigorous training program, Michelle finds time to travel abroad in search of local independent

growers of high quality perfume ingredients.

When not competing or working on her business, Michelle enjoys surfing, mountain biking and tennis.

Causes
Colorado Children’s Campaign The Colorado Children’s Campaign works on legislation to improve the lives of Colorado kids through better health care, education and quality of life. A child only has the resources of the family he or she is born into. If that family lacks the means and or fortitude then the child suffers. I believe every child should have the opportunity to get a good education, quality health care and excel in activities that interest them. WaterPartners I strongly agree with the philosophy of this nonprofit and find their work meaningful, sustainable, and necessary. There is a dire need to supply safe water to much of the world. The World Health Organization says more than 1 billion people do not have access to safe or adequate water supplies and water-related diseases are the main cause of death for children under 5. WaterPartners International is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization committed exclusively to providing safe drinking water and sanitation to people in developing countries. They work with the communities to engineer smart, but simple technology that is appropriate for the location and particular situation. They engage and teach the community about the water system so they can repair and maintain it on their own. They do not do the work for free they charge the community a small amount, that does not come close to covering the cost, but gives the community a scene of worth and invested interest in the project. WaterPartners, has the lofty goal of "reaching a day when everyone in the world can take a safe drink of water." Women’s Sports Foundation The mission at the Women's Sports Foundation is simple: to advance the lives of girls and women through sport and physical activity.
Nonprofits I Donate To
I am honored to have donated to and supported several nonprofits: The Colorado Children’s Campaign, Children’s Hospital, WaterPartnes, Women’s Sports Foundation and The Children’s Museum.
Places I Volunteer At
I often volunteer my background in skiing in the form of "ski-with-me" days to raise money for my causes. I am looking forward to donating my engineering skills in the design and building of clean water systems for developing countries with WaterPartners organization in the future. For some of the other organizations I enjoy talking directly to children in classrooms and or encouraging adults in public settings to get active in sports, their communities and be kind to the environment.
Other Ways I Make a Difference in The World
Being a skier I am obviously deeply concerned with the environment and believe strongly in the need to protect our climate. My career as a professional skier has relied heavily on a sustainable ecosystem. Unfortunately, I am starting to see glaciers recede due, in part, to greenhouse gas emissions. This trend has impacted the sport of skiing and I am doing what I can to reduce my footprint on the environment. Aside from the more common things like recycling, conserving electricity and driving less I am always thinking and looking for new technology in the form of solar energy that can help in my efforts. I am interested in preserving historical landmarks. I think it is so important to improve, learn and build with new technology, but also to preserve history whenever remotely possible. I help and encourage historic renovation as oppose to demolition.
Other Ways I Would Like to Make a Difference
I am very interested in contributing my chemical engineering knowledge to lend a hand in developing clean water systems for under-developed communities. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and I look forward to being more involved in this important service in the future.

To everyone reading Michelle's profile, this is an outstanding Olympic athlete, who is also a Colorado School of Mines Engineering graduate, and who has put her education to work to literally create her own all natural line of perfume called Phi-Nomenal. Check it out at www.phinomenal.com.

One of the best parts of MTDN is the amazing people we continue to meet who are all doing amazing things in this world.

Thanks, Michelle, for sharing your gifts with the world!!!
